For many Newfoundlanders, buying and selling their unwanted items has always been complicated. Enter Corner Brook Classifieds on the scene – offering users from Western Newfoundland and the surrounding area with an opportunity to post a free classified ad and sell their items for free.
Why another classified ad system and why one so specifically targeted at Western Newfoundland (specifically the Corner Brook area)?
According to a company spokesperson, there are many larger sites dedicated to offering classified ad services for Newfoundland as a whole or the large areas of St. John’s and Mount Pearl. Corner Brook Classifieds targets a more narrow group of users and provides both the individuals and businesses an opportunity to buy and sell their items on free while targeting locals in this specific area.
“With Corner Brook Classifieds, we hope to be more intimate. Users are more likely to buy if they can go see an item or make arrangements to pick it up in their own local area.” says Corner Brook Classifieds. “If you’re interested in buying a snowmobile or car and it’s located in St. John’s the chances of driving to see it first before buying it is rather slim. If you can drive just down the street or to the next community in the Bay of Islands and see it, your chances increase of selling your item.”
Corner Brook Classifieds offers a variety of categories for users wanting to place their free classified ad including things such as real estate, recreational vehicles, clothing and much more. All you need to do is create an account and you can post your free classified ad, targeting Corner Brook and the Western Newfoundland area.

There’s nothing more unique in Newfoundland and Labrador than Newfoundland Screech Rum.
Described as “The Taste of Legends”, Newfoundland Screech has its roots in the 1700s as sailors returned from Jamaica with rum. It quickly became a favourite of Newfoundlanders and it has now become synonymous with the Newfoundland culture.
How did Newfoundland Screech get its name?
The story has been told of the commanding officer of the first American detachment stationed here in Newfoundland. He was offered a drop of rum after dinner and after seeing his host toss the drink back, the American adhered to the local Newfoundland custom and downed the glass of rum in one gulp.
The commanding officer let out a tremendous howl. Legend has it people rushed from miles around to assist the officer and to see what was going on. When an American sergaent pounded on the door asking “What the cripes was that ungodly screech?”, a Newfoundlander opened the door and said “The Screech? ‘Tis the rum, me son.”
The legend of Newfoundland screech was born and many wanted to try the “mysterious screech rum”, making it a favourite for years to come.
The original label for Newfoundland screech was replaced by a more modern label in 2004, shortly after the rum won a gold medal at the 14th Annual International Rum Festival. The image below shows both the old and new looks for Newfoundland Screech.
Newfoundland Screech is also used throughout the province of Newfoundland and Labrador to perform “Screen In” ceremonies, where tourists are made HonouraryNewfoundlanders where they are required to perform a few tasks and follow it up with a drink of Screech. The Screech-In ceremonies have become so famous, that the Newfoundland Liquor Corporation offers certificates to those who have participated and joined the ranks of “The Royal Order of Newfoundland Screechers”.
